"Visita a Godenholm" narra la llegada a una pequeña isla de una mujer y dos hombres, quienes han sido invitados por un misterioso personaje que ejercerá como guía en un viaje iniciático. El relato, publicado dos años antes que "Las puertas de la percepción" de Huxley, es probablemente la primera obra de ficción en la que se describe una experiencia con LSD, sustancia que el autor había consumido con Albert Hofmann en 1951. Jünger ya había experimentado previamente con el cannabis y la mescalina, y había escrito sobre ello en "El corazón aventurero" y en la distopía "Heliópolis", pero aquí la descripción de la experiencia psiconáutica se convierte en el asunto central de la obra, en la que la escritura del autor alcanza una de sus cimas poéticas.
